GMMMG have published the following statement “GMMMG Guidance on the issue of prescriptions in response to patient concerns over stock shortages” which should be communicated to prescribers and pharmacies across Greater Manchester.

21.1.19

The Greater Manchester Asthma Management Plan has been published to the GMMMG website. There are now in excess of 100 different combinations of inhaler devices and drugs available for treatment of asthma. GM healthcare professionals expressed a desire for a simplified list of inhaler choices to help guide them through this myriad of preparations. There is evidence that healthcare professionals and patients do not always use their inhalers properly, increased familiarity with a smaller number of inhaler devices is expected to promote correct usage, leading to better disease control and reduced hospital admissions. The overriding aim of the GM Asthma Management Plan is to ensure the most appropriate management of a patient’s asthma which should result in fewer exacerbations and therefore fewer admissions to hospital. The plan attempts to be as consistent as possible in terms of keeping the same device throughout different disease stages.
